Foreign workers, international students, and tourists visiting Canada might need a visa, depending on their nationality.

Understanding Visas and Permits

Work and study visas are crucial for those needing them and differ from work and study permits. Below are common questions newcomers have about visas for workers and students.

What’s the Difference Between a Visa and a Permit?

  • Work/Study Permits: Allow foreign nationals to work or study in Canada for a specific period. They provide legal status and outline the holder's activities and duration in Canada.
  • Visas: Allow entry and re-entry to Canada. They show proof of legal status and approval to enter the country. Visas linked to work, study, or tourism are called Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs). Some nationals might need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead.

Can I Pay for a Visa/eTA in My Local Currency?

Many can pay for visas or eTAs in their local currency. Check the IRCC page to see which visa office processes applications from your country for more details.

Should I Apply for an eTA or Visa with My Work/Study Permit?

IRCC advises not to apply for an eTA or visa separately. Successful applicants will receive an eTA or visa along with their work or study permit.

Can I Leave and Re-enter Canada with a Temporary Resident Visa?

  • Single-Entry Visa: Requires a new visa to re-enter, unless traveling to the U.S., St. Pierre, or Miquelon, and returning before your stay ends.
  • Multiple-Entry Visa: Allows multiple entries during its validity period.

How Do I Know When My Temporary Resident Status Expires?

  • Work/Study Permit Holders: Check your permit for expiration.
  • Tourists: A CBSA officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. If no date is noted, your status expires six months from the entry date.

What If My Visa Is in an Old Passport?

You can still use the visa in your old passport by carrying both the old and new passports. However, it’s recommended to get a new visa in your valid passport to avoid delays at the border.
