Busy Week for IRCC: 1,800 Invitations Issued in New Express Entry Draw

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has had an eventful week, issuing 1,800 invitations to apply (ITAs) in its third Express Entry draw in seven days. This draw focused on candidates with French language skills.

Key Points

  • Number of ITAs: 1,800
  • Category: French language proficiency
  • Minimum CRS Score: 400

This CRS score of 400 is one of the lowest this year. The previous day, IRCC invited 6,300 candidates under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) with a minimum score of 515, the lowest for non-category-specific draws this year.

Recent Draws Summary

Earlier in the week, IRCC held a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draw, inviting 1,391 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 670. High scores in PNP draws are due to the extra 600 points awarded for provincial nominations.

So far, July has seen 19,161 ITAs issued across seven draws, making it the busiest month of 2024.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry manages applications for three immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Candidates are scored using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which considers factors like occupation, age, education, language ability, and work experience. Introduced in 2015, it aims to process applications within six months.

What is Category-Based Selection?

Started in 2023, category-based selection targets candidates to fill urgent workforce gaps. Categories for 2023-2025 include:

  • Healthcare occupations
  • STEM professions
  • Trades occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  • French-language proficiency

These draws require candidates to be in the Express Entry pool.
