Canada’s reputation as a top destination for international students is built on its diverse society, high-quality educational institutions, and opportunities for work and immigration after graduation. To keep this program sustainable and protect students, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced new regulations.

Key Changes to the International Student Program

  1. Work Hours for International Students
    • Eligible international students can now work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during their academic terms. This change aims to provide students with more flexibility while balancing work and studies.

  2. Changing Learning Institutions
    • International students must apply for and receive approval for a new study permit before switching to a different learning institution. This regulation ensures transparency and accountability, maintaining the program's integrity.

Protecting Students and Ensuring Compliance

IRCC’s efforts to sustain the International Student Program focus on combating fraud and protecting students from exploitation. As part of this effort, designated learning institutions (DLIs) play a critical role in ensuring compliance:

  • DLI Compliance Requirements: Since 2015, IRCC has collaborated with DLIs to improve student compliance reporting. Moving forward, DLIs must submit regular compliance reports and verify acceptance letters. Failure to comply could lead to suspensions, preventing the institution from enrolling new international students for up to one year.

Strengthening Oversight for a Better Student Experience

These new measures are part of Canada’s commitment to upholding a high standard of integrity for its international student programs. By enforcing compliance and improving oversight, the IRCC aims to provide a secure and enriching academic environment for international students, free from misuse and fraud.

Looking Ahead

With these updates, Canada remains committed to supporting international students, ensuring their safety, and offering a pathway to valuable educational and work experiences. The changes align with Canada’s broader immigration goals as outlined in the 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan, emphasizing quality and long-term sustainability.

For students and institutions alike, understanding and complying with these regulations is key to maintaining the benefits and opportunities that Canada’s International Student Program offers. Stay informed, plan ahead, and continue to make the most of Canada’s exceptional educational landscape.
