Canada Connects: A Helping Hand for Newcomers to Settle in Canada

feature image

The Canadian government is committed to helping newcomers settle and thrive in their new home. One of the key programs designed to assist newcomers is Canada Connects—a mentorship initiative that pairs eligible newcomers with local mentors to ease their transition into Canadian life.

What is Canada Connects?

Canada Connects is a collaborative program run by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in partnership with local newcomer service providers. The program connects newcomers to Canada with Canadian citizens or long-time community members, helping them integrate into their new communities.

Through Canada Connects, participants receive guidance and support in areas like:

  • Building connections with peers in the community.
  • Enhancing communication skills and learning about Canadian culture.
  • Promoting understanding between Canadians and newcomers about the immigrant experience.

Who is Eligible for Canada Connects?

Eligibility for Canada Connects is based on whether a newcomer qualifies for settlement services. These services are designed to help newcomers integrate into Canadian society and may include:

  • Language training (general and job-specific).
  • Childcare support to assist parents attending language or job training.
  • Needs assessments to identify areas where support is needed.
  • Orientation services to help navigate life in Canada.
  • Employment assistance to support job searches and career development. The availability of settlement services varies depending on the type of funding—federal, provincial, or municipal. Here's how eligibility works:
  • Federal Settlement Services: Available to new permanent residents, protected persons, or certain temporary residents transitioning to permanent residence (PR).
  • Provincial and Municipal Services: May also support temporary residents such as visitors, international students, or foreign workers.

Due to its funding by IRCC, Canada Connects is primarily open to:

  • New permanent residents.
  • Temporary residents transitioning to PR (as confirmed by IRCC).
  • Convention refugees.
  • Individuals in similar circumstances.

How to Participate in Canada Connects

Eligible newcomers can participate in Canada Connects through immigrant-serving organizations in their community. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Find an Immigrant-Serving Organization: Search online for organizations in your area or visit the IRCC website for federally funded services.
  2. Confirm Eligibility: Speak directly with the organization to ensure you qualify for the Canada Connects program and other settlement services.
  3. Enroll in the Program: Once eligibility is confirmed, the organization will guide you through the registration process and match you with a mentor—either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or long-time community member.
  4. Sign Up Online: Many organizations allow newcomers to register for services online, even before arriving in Canada.
