Big news for international students in Canada! Starting November 15, international students can now work up to 24 hours per week off-campus while classes are in session. This increase from the previous limit of 20 hours is part of the Canadian government's efforts to support students while maintaining academic success.

Key Details About the New Rule

Increased Off-Campus Work Hours

  • International students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions.
  • This is a 20% increase from the previous limit of 20 hours.

Unchanged On-Campus and Break Policies

The cap on off-campus work hours applies only during academic terms. Students are still allowed to work:

  • Unlimited hours on-campus during the academic term.
  • Unlimited hours off-campus during breaks between terms, such as summer or winter holidays.

Why the Change?

According to Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the new 24-hour limit strikes the “appropriate balance,” allowing students to work more while ensuring they don’t compromise their academic performance.

New Rules for Changing Schools

Another important update for international students involves changing designated learning institutions (DLIs):

  • Students must now apply for a new study permit before transferring to a different school.
  • This replaces the earlier rule where students could simply update their IRCC account when changing schools.

These changes aim to enhance the integrity of Canada’s International Student Program, according to IRCC.

Traditional Rules

For years, international students in Canada were limited to working 20 hours per week off-campus during the academic term.

Pandemic Policy

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a temporary measure allowed students to work up to 40 hours per week off-campus to address Canada’s labour shortages.

  • This policy ended on April 30, 2024.

What Does This Mean for International Students?

The increased cap on work hours gives students more flexibility to earn extra income while studying. However, balancing work with academics will remain crucial to ensure long-term success.

The stricter rules for changing schools underline the government’s commitment to improving program integrity and accountability within the International Student Program.
