Recent announcements by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have introduced changes impacting international students, effective January 1st, 2024. Students planning to apply for a Canadian study permit may gain significant advantages by submitting their applications in December 2023. Below are the key benefits of applying this month:

Reduced Cost-of-Living Requirement

On December 7th, IRCC announced an increase in the cost-of-living requirement for international students, from $10,000 CAD to $20,635 CAD, effective January 1st, 2024. This revision reflects the current economic climate and inflation rates, a first since the early 2000s. By applying before this date, students can adhere to the lower $10,000 threshold. However, it's important to note that this amount might not fully cover living expenses in Canada.

Eligibility for Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) with Online Study

IRCC also plans to extend the measure allowing international students to count online study time towards PGWP eligibility. To qualify, students must:

- Ensure less than 50% of their program is completed via remote learning outside Canada.

- Start their program before September 1st, 2024.

Applying in December maximizes the opportunity to include online study time in PGWP eligibility, potentially reducing living costs by staying home.

Study Permit Application Requirements

- To apply for a study permit, students must have:

- Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

- A valid passport for all application members.

- Two passport-sized photos per person.

- Proof of sufficient financial support for the first year of study.

- A Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) if studying in Quebec.

- Criminal and medical admissibility.

- A commitment to leave Canada at the end of the authorized stay.

- Any additional documents requested by IRCC.

Expedited Processing through the Student Direct Stream (SDS)

The SDS, available to applicants from specific countries, offers faster processing within 20 calendar days. Meeting SDS eligibility criteria is essential for those needing a quick permit decision.

Applying with Precision

While study permit applications are often straightforward, approval is subject to immigration officer discretion. Inclusion of all required documents and meeting admissibility criteria does not guarantee approval. Officers assess the likelihood of applicants leaving Canada post-study.

In summary, applying for a Canadian study permit in December 2023 offers financial benefits and flexibility in study options, making it a strategic choice for prospective international students.
