How to Gain Permanent Residency Through Express Entry: A Simplified Guide
Becoming a permanent resident of Canada via the Express
Entry system involves a clear set of steps. While you cannot apply directly for
permanent residency through Express Entry, you can receive an Invitation to
Apply (ITA) from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Here’s
how the process works, along with what’s required for each step.
Eligibility and the Express Entry Pool
To be considered, you need to meet the requirements for at
least one of the three federal programs managed by Express Entry. Each program
targets skilled workers and has specific criteria:
- Canadian
Experience Class (CEC): For individuals with
skilled work experience in Canada.
- Federal
Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers
without Canadian work experience.
- Federal
Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For tradespeople without
Canadian work experience.
It’s also essential to intend to live outside Quebec, as Quebec has its own
immigration processes. Once you confirm your eligibility, you can enter the
Express Entry pool by submitting an online profile.
How the Express Entry Process Works
- Submit
Your Profile:
Start by uploading your credentials and test results. These include
language test scores and, for some, an Educational Credential Assessment
(ECA).
- Get
a CRS Score:
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) assigns points based on factors
like age, education, work experience, and language ability. The higher
your CRS score, the better your chances of being invited.
- Receive
an ITA:
In regular draws, IRCC invites the highest-ranked candidates in the pool
to apply for permanent residency. If you meet the cut-off score, you’ll
get an ITA.
- Apply
for Permanent Residency:
Once invited, you have 60 days to complete and submit your permanent
residency application. This involves providing additional documents, such
as police clearance certificates and proof of funds. IRCC typically
processes applications within six months.
- Become
a Permanent Resident:
If your application is successful, you’ll receive a Confirmation of
Permanent Residence (COPR). Once you land in Canada and sign your COPR,
you’ll officially become a permanent resident.
Tips to Improve Your Chances
- Enhance
Your CRS Score:
- Retake
language tests to achieve higher scores.
- Gain
additional skilled work experience.
- Pursue
a provincial nomination for 600 additional points.
- Secure
a valid job offer, which can add up to 200 points.
- Explore
Other Options if Needed:
If you don’t qualify for Express Entry, consider alternative pathways like
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), the Atlantic Immigration Program, or
federal immigration pilots.
Final Thoughts
Express Entry is a competitive system, but by understanding
the process, meeting eligibility requirements, and actively improving your CRS
score, you can significantly enhance your chances of becoming a permanent
resident of Canada.
