The Government of Canada has unveiled significant updates to the Express Entry categories, effective February 27, 2025. These changes include the introduction of a new category and adjustments to existing ones, reflecting Canada’s shifting economic and labour market priorities.

What’s New?

  • Education Category:
Canada has added a new category focused on education. Five key occupations are now part of this group, emphasizing the country’s increasing need for skilled educators.
  • Expanded Healthcare and Social Services Category:
The healthcare category has been broadened to include a variety of social services occupations, further addressing the demand for professionals in these fields.
  • Transport Category Removed:
On the other hand, the Transport category has been removed from the Express Entry system, signalling a shift in focus toward other sectors.

Current Express Entry Categories

The updated Express Entry categories are as follows:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations
  • Trades occupations
  • Education occupations

While all of these categories remain eligible, priority will be given to the following four:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • Trades occupations
  • Education occupations

Detailed Occupational Changes

In addition to category updates, many occupations within the existing categories have been revised. Some have been added, while others have been removed. Here’s a summary of the main adjustments:

  • Healthcare and Social Services:
Eight new roles—ranging from social workers to pharmacists—are now included, while six previously eligible occupations have been removed.
  • STEM Occupations:
Six new roles, such as civil engineering technologists and geological engineers, have been added. However, a significant number—19 occupations—have been removed.
  • Trades:
This category sees the inclusion of 19 new jobs, including heavy-duty equipment mechanics and construction managers, while four roles have been removed.
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food:
Although only two roles have been removed, no new occupations have been added in this category.
  • Education:
The new Education category now covers five key occupations, such as elementary and secondary school teachers and early childhood educators.

Why These Changes?

Express Entry categories are designed based on Canada’s economic and demographic objectives. Occupation-based categories focus on sectors where Canada faces significant labor shortages, ensuring the country attracts skilled workers to fill these gaps. Meanwhile, categories like French-language proficiency reflect Canada’s commitment to bilingualism and the promotion of French outside Quebec.

What It Means for Applicants

For those planning to apply for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry, these updates highlight the importance of aligning their profiles with the new priorities. Understanding these categories and the corresponding eligible occupations can help candidates determine their eligibility and improve their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
