A Simple Guide for International Students to Find Great Work Experiences in Canada!

Are you an international student in Canada dreaming about gaining real-world work experience while you study? Good news! Many students, just like you, can join co-op and internship programs offered by their colleges or universities. These programs are great for getting a taste of the professional world and adding some impressive experience to your resume before you even graduate.

Who Can Apply?

To dive into these opportunities, you need to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in a program that includes work experience as a part of its curriculum. But remember, the work part of your study program can't be more than half of your total program time.

You must also get a work and study permit if you're eligible and interested. This is essential because it officially allows you to gain work experience as part of your education.

Eligibility Checklist for Co-op/Intern Work Permit

Before applying for a co-op or internship work permit, make sure you tick off all the following:

  • You have a valid study permit.
  • You can show that your program requires work experience for you to graduate. This might be a letter from your school or details from your program's curriculum.
  • You have confirmation from your DLI that work placements are necessary for your degree.

However, not everyone needs this special work permit. Some students' study permit conditions already allow for such work. But, if you're studying English or French as a second language, taking general interest courses, or preparing for another study program, you'll likely need a different work permit to work in Canada.

How to Apply

How you apply for your co-op or internship work permit depends on where you are in your study permit process. If you're already in Canada with your study permit, you can easily apply online for your work permit.

If you're still waiting for your study permit or you're not in Canada yet, the process will look a bit different:

  1. If your study permit application is still being processed, use the IRCC webform to let them know you're enrolled in a program with mandatory co-op or internship.
  2. If your study permit is approved but not in Canada, you'll need an acceptance letter from your DLI. This letter should confirm your program includes mandatory work placements. You can apply for your study permit and work permit together.

The Government of Canada provides a helpful webpage with a tool that guides you through the application process based on your specific situation.

In a Nutshell

Gaining work experience during your studies in Canada is not just possible; it's encouraged! It can significantly boost your resume and give you a taste of the Canadian work environment. Ensure you're eligible, have the proper permits, and apply through the correct channels. With a bit of preparation, you can make the most of your study experience in Canada!
