Canada Introduces Personalized Processing Times for Work Permit Extensions and PGWPs

Canada has introduced a new way for some work permit applicants to check more personalized processing time estimates.

Applicants applying for a work permit extension from inside Canada, as well as eligible Post-Graduation Work Permit applicants, can now see an estimated remaining processing time based on the date they submitted their application.

The update was added to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s processing time system in late September 2026.

Personalized Processing Times for Work Permit Extensions

Applicants who select “Temporary Residence” and then choose “Work Permit Extension in Canada” can now see an estimated remaining wait time in weeks.

The estimate is based on the date the application was submitted.

Applicants can also see:

  • The estimated number of work permit applicants ahead of them
  • The total number of applications currently waiting for a decision
  • An estimated processing time based on their application date

As of September 26, 2026, approximately 202,900 applicants were reported as waiting for a decision.

People who have not yet submitted an application can also check the estimated processing time if they were to apply at the time of checking.

Who Can Use the Personalized Processing Time Tool?

The personalized estimate is currently available mainly for applicants inside Canada who are:

  • Applying to extend an existing work permit
  • Applying for their first Post-Graduation Work Permit after completing their studies in Canada
  • Applying to change the conditions of an existing work permit

The personalized estimate is based on the date the application was filed.

What Changed in IRCC’s Processing Time System?

Previously, applicants could only select “Work Permit in Canada” and see a general processing time based on the date they checked the system.

The updated system now separates work permit extension applications from certain first-time work permit applications.

The existing “Work Permit in Canada” category remains available, but it now generally applies to applicants inside Canada who are applying for their first work permit and are not applying for a PGWP.

This change may give applicants a clearer idea of how much longer their application could take to process.

What Is Maintained Status?

Work permit holders who submit an extension application before their current permit expires may be able to benefit from maintained status.

Maintained status was previously known as implied status.

It can allow an applicant to continue working in Canada under the conditions of their existing work permit while waiting for IRCC to make a decision on the extension application.

To benefit from maintained status, the applicant must generally submit the extension application before the existing permit expires and remain in Canada.

Temporary Measure for Some Provincial Nominees

Canada also introduced a temporary measure on June 9, 2026, to support certain Provincial Nominee Program applicants whose work permits are close to expiring.

Under this measure, some applicants applying for permanent residence through a base Provincial Nominee Program may be able to apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit earlier.

Normally, applicants may need to receive an acknowledgement of receipt for their permanent residence application before becoming eligible for a Bridging Open Work Permit.

The temporary measure can exempt certain eligible applicants from this requirement.

The measure is currently expected to remain in place until December 31, 2026.

Canada Continues to Expand Personalized Processing Times

IRCC has been gradually expanding personalized processing time estimates for different immigration programs.

In October 2025, personalized processing times were introduced for certain permanent residence and citizenship applicants.

The latest update now extends this approach to eligible work permit extension applicants and first-time PGWP applicants applying from within Canada.

Why This Update Matters

The new personalized processing time system can help applicants better understand where their application may stand in the processing queue.

Instead of relying only on a general processing time, eligible applicants can now receive an estimate based on when they submitted their application.

However, processing times remain estimates and may change depending on application volumes, case complexity, document requirements and IRCC processing capacity.

Applicants should continue monitoring their IRCC account and ensure that any request for additional documents or information is responded to within the required deadline.
