Why You Need a SIN

In Canada, all residents need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work and access most government benefits and services. This nine-digit number must be provided to your employer to help manage important government programs such as Employment Insurance (EI) and the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

Who Can Apply for a SIN?

Anyone aged 12 or older can apply for a SIN. Parents, legal guardians, or legal representatives can apply on behalf of children under 12 or adults in their care.

How to Apply for a SIN

You can apply for a SIN online, in person at a Service Canada location, or by mail. The required documents may vary depending on whether you are applying for yourself or someone else, and based on your status in Canada (citizen, permanent resident (PR), or temporary resident (TR)).

General Document Requirements:

  • Valid digital copies of original documents
  • Clear, legible, and complete documents (including borders)
  • Documents in English or French (translations required for other languages)

Applying as a Permanent Resident (PR)

Documents Needed:

  1. Primary Identity Document:
    • PR card
    • Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) (valid within one year of becoming a PR)
    • Record of Landing (issued before June 28, 2002)

  2. Secondary Document:
    • Passport (Canadian or foreign)
    • Canadian provincial or territorial ID card or driver’s license
    • Other Canadian government-issued ID (must show full legal name and date of birth)

  3. Supporting Document:
    • Required if the name on your primary or secondary document is different from the name on the SIN application

Applying as a Temporary Resident (TR)

Documents Needed:

  1. Primary Identity Document:
    • Work permit
    • Study permit (must indicate work authorization)
    • Visitor record (must indicate work authorization)
    • Diplomatic identity card (with work authorization)

Receiving and Updating Your SIN

Online applications are processed within five business days if all documents are in order. Temporary residents receive a SIN starting with 9, which must be updated when their immigration documents are renewed. Ensure the expiry dates on your SIN record and immigration document match.

Forgotten, Lost, or Stolen SIN

Keep your SIN private and secure. If forgotten, you can find it on an income tax return, record of employment, or RRSP contribution. For lost or stolen SINs, a new one is issued only if there is proof of fraudulent use. Monitor your bank accounts for any suspicious activity and take necessary actions if needed.
