Common Issues That Can Delay Your Canadian Citizenship Application — And How to Avoid Them

If you're a permanent resident of Canada planning to apply for Canadian citizenship, it's important to understand what can complicate your application. Even minor mistakes or missing documents can cause major delays in processing.

In this blog, we’ll go over the most common issues that can make your citizenship application “non-routine,” as well as simple steps you can take to avoid them.

What Is a “Non-Routine” Citizenship Application?

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) refers to certain cases as "complex" or "non-routine" when extra attention, documents, or background checks are needed.

While standard citizenship applications currently take around 8 months to process, complex applications can take much longer. As of the latest update, there are more than 42,700 citizenship applications in IRCC's backlog.

Top 3 Reasons for Citizenship Delays

IRCC has identified the following as common reasons for delays in citizenship processing:

1. Missing or Incomplete Documentation

If your application doesn’t include all the required documents, IRCC may request additional information — which can significantly delay processing.

To avoid this, make sure to submit all required documents and supporting evidence the first time around. Include alternative documents if originals are unavailable, and clearly explain any missing pieces.

2. Missing a Citizenship Test, Interview, or Hearing

If you don’t show up for your scheduled citizenship test, interview, or hearing, your application may be delayed or even refused. Always check your IRCC portal or emails regularly and attend all scheduled appointments.

3. Criminal or Admissibility Concerns

If IRCC believes there may be issues with criminality, security, or misrepresentation, your application will be flagged for further review. These issues can cause serious delays or rejection of your application.
