Your Essential Guide to Port of Entry (POE) Letters for Canada: What You Need to Know

Are you heading to Canada on a study, work, or super visa? You might need a Port of Entry (POE) letter, and here's what you should know about it:

What's a POE Letter?

A POE letter is a document from Canadian Immigration (IRCC) saying you can come to Canada as a temporary resident. You'll get this letter if you've applied online for a study permit, work permit, or super visa, and your email is included in the application. Not everyone needs one, but if you do, it's crucial for your entry into Canada.

How It Works

Once approved, you'll receive your POE letter through your IRCC online account. Bring this letter when you come to Canada—it confirms your identity and lets the border officers know they can let you in and give you your permit.

Important Points:

  • POE letters are not the same as your study or work permit. They're just to introduce you at the border.
  • Keep it safe! If you don't have your POE letter when you arrive, you might not get your permit.
  • Validity: The letter is valid up to the date mentioned. You must enter Canada before this date. For most people, the letter lasts as long as your intended stay, but for International Experience Canada (IEC) participants, it's typically valid for 12 months.

What to Do When You Arrive

Show the border officer your POE letter (printed or electronic), along with any other required documents like a visitor visa, if you have one.

Lost Your POE Letter?

If you lose or accidentally delete your POE letter, don't panic. You can ask IRCC to resend it through their web form. Make sure to check your IRCC account for the new copy.

Remember, this letter is key to smoothly starting your temporary stay in Canada, so keep it safe and understand its validity and what to do with it once you arrive. Safe travels!
