Starting this fall, there’s good news for international
students in Canada! The maximum weekly work hours for students working
off-campus will increase from 20 to 24 hours. This change was announced by
Immigration Minister Marc Miller in April, emphasizing that the new limit
balances work opportunities with academic performance.
When Will the New Rule Take Effect?
While the exact date hasn't been confirmed, the rule is
expected to come into effect this month. Until then, students can continue to
work up to 20 hours per week off-campus while attending classes.
Can International Students Work Full-Time?
During scheduled school breaks, like summer or winter
holidays, students can work full-time. There is no cap on the number of hours
they can work during these breaks. Additionally, remote work for employers
based outside of Canada is not restricted by the off-campus hour limits.

Recent Changes to Work Hour Limits
Previously, international students were limited to 20 hours
per week during the school term. However, during the pandemic, a temporary
policy allowed them to work up to 40 hours a week, which ended in April 2024.
This policy was introduced to address labor shortages but has now been
discontinued to maintain academic priorities.
