How Many Hours Can International Students Work in Canada?

feature image

Starting this fall, there’s good news for international students in Canada! The maximum weekly work hours for students working off-campus will increase from 20 to 24 hours. This change was announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller in April, emphasizing that the new limit balances work opportunities with academic performance.

When Will the New Rule Take Effect?

While the exact date hasn't been confirmed, the rule is expected to come into effect this month. Until then, students can continue to work up to 20 hours per week off-campus while attending classes.

Can International Students Work Full-Time?

During scheduled school breaks, like summer or winter holidays, students can work full-time. There is no cap on the number of hours they can work during these breaks. Additionally, remote work for employers based outside of Canada is not restricted by the off-campus hour limits.

Part-time students can also work off-campus if they are in their final semester and need a reduced course load to complete their program.

Some students aren’t eligible for off-campus work, including those:

  • Only enrolled in English or French as a second language programs

In these cases, students will need a work permit to work while studying.

Working on-campus is another option. On-campus jobs have no hourly limits, and they include roles with the school, faculty, student organizations, or private businesses operating on-campus.

Recent Changes to Work Hour Limits

Previously, international students were limited to 20 hours per week during the school term. However, during the pandemic, a temporary policy allowed them to work up to 40 hours a week, which ended in April 2024. This policy was introduced to address labor shortages but has now been discontinued to maintain academic priorities.
